Mac OS X a BlackBerry Pearl 8130 and PocketMac

In November of 2007 I came to the conclusion that I needed a smart phone. I’m currently working on a Mac Mini and wanted to not only get email on my cell phone but also wanted to have my calendar, address book and task list. At the time when I asked the sales person in the Verizon store, I was told that they had 3 phones that were Mac compatible the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, BlackBerry 8830 and Palm Treo 755p. I previously owned a Palm tungsten E. It was nice but I opted for the BlackBerry Pearl 8130.
I was a little skeptical about just how compatible the phone would be with my Mac since it took some digging by the sales person to figure out that BlackBerry was Mac compatible. With that said I bought the BlackBerry Pearl 8130. It did not come with any software in the box I had to download it from the www.BlackBerry.com website. I downloaded PocketMac v4.0.20b. After installing it I was able to sync with iCal, Address Book and Mail. It supported other applications too, but those were the applications I was using.
Ireally like BlackBerry Pearl 8130. Some of the things I liked were the compact size and the way it guessed what I was typing. The keyboard was not a full QWERTY but a version with no more than 2 letters per button so typing was fairly easy and the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 seemed to learn from what you entered and got really good at guessing what you were going to type. The Map tool is pretty cool too. You can search for places and get directions. To be clear though it was not turn by turn GPS, though you could use Verizon’s VZ Navigator for that. I also liked the fact that the phone was smart enough to know when it saw a phone number in an email or when browsing the web. If you clicked on a phone number it would ask if you wanted to dial it. Very cool. It made www.yellowpages.com a very useful site on my phone.
I did run into 3 big issues that resulted in the return of my BlackBerry Pearl 8130.
The first issue was attempting to fix the calendar on the phone. Somehow the calendar on my BlackBerry Pearl 8130 was in triplicate. The Mac was fine. No one could figure out why it was in triplicate. What is worse no one from Verizon or BlackBerry could fix it. I was told by a BlackBerry tech if only I had a Windows computer they could correct the issue in minutes. I did not have a Windows computer. All I had was a Mac OS computer. Over a 2 day period I spoke with 2 BlackBerry technicians. After throwing many darts, the second tech I spoke with decided that a security erase was the only way to fix it. Then I would have to push the data from my computer down to the device. So I did.
That was in my first 30 days of owning the phone. I had to decide if I should keep it or return it to the store. I really liked the phone. When the sync was working it worked. The support for fixing issues was lacking but there was a solution. I kept the phone.
The second issue comes up in my 8th week of owning my BlackBerry Pearl 8130. I bought a new wireless keyboard and mouse from logitech, the Cordless wave. After installing the control console software on my Mac the PocketMac sync stopped working. It took 2.5 hours on the phone with support to trouble shoot this issue. Support had no idea what the issue was. Lucky me I was able to boot my Mac to a disk that did not have the keyboard control console installed on it. I tested PocketMac and it worked again. It looks like PocketMac is using the keyboard controller to make calls to helper applications to perform the sync of various items like calendar, address book and email.
All I can ask is, “Why would a programmer rely on something like the keyboard controller to communicate with other applications?” It makes no sense. I should be able to install a 3rd party keyboard and mouse without having it break my sync tool. I would not expect this kind of home grown programming from a commercial application like PocketMac. Ultimately I returned the logitech Cordless wave keyboard and mouse and bought a wired Mac keyboard and a Kensington wireless mouse. This combination of hardware worked fine.
Again I considered returning the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 but decided that the devil I knew was better than one I would have to get to know. Besides that the only other option from Verizon was a Palm Treo 755p. It just did not appeal to me. Once again I kept the phone knowing that there would always be this issue with 3rd party keyboards.
Since the first two issues could not sway me to return this phone a third issue came up to test my patients. I wanted to update the firmware on my phone. The updater would not run on my Mac OS computer. It required a Windows computer. This was my breaking point. After an hour on the phone with Verizon support I was told I can take my phone to any corporate store and they could update the firmware for me. So I did. I drove to the Verizon store near me. At first I was told no they could not update smart phones. They could only handsets. Then after another hour at the store they reluctantly offered to try something they have never done before. They would use one of their windows computers to run the firmware update for me. Then came the clincher, this operation would reset the phone to factory setting erasing my settings and possible some data. I knew I had my calendar and my address book on my Mac but I did not have my bookmarks and I was sure that I would loose something that was not backed up since PocketMac was only a sync tool it did not backup the entire phone and it’s settings. It only synced data. I did not allow them to update the firmware on the phone.
At this point it was painfully clear that this was not a Mac OS compatible smart phone. Yes it could sync but it was not fully compatible with the maintenance tools needed to own and operate the phone as a Mac user. Sure a firmware update works flawlessly on a windows computer, according a a Verizon support technician, even restoring all the correct settings, but not on a Mac. The following day I called customer service. They were very understanding allowing me to port my phone number to another provider and giving me a full refund.
I now have my eye on the 8GB iPhone. I’m thinking this should be compatible with my Mac OS computer … Right?
Additional Note:
The PocketMac installation does not install PocketMac for multiple users on a Mac that share the computer with separate logins. When PocketMac installs it places files that are meant for general use, like plugins, in the users library folder instead of the computers library folder. This means that PocketMac must be installed for each user with a login on the computer that will need to sync their phone. Now this gets even better. You cannot install PocketMac unless you are an admin user. So you need change all the user accounts to have admin privileges, install PocketMac, then change them back to simple users. This is completely stupid.
Sincerely,
Mike
I feel your pain with PocketMac 🙁
Hi Stu,
You’d think that BlackBerry would force PocketMac to be more standards based and add the missing features. After all they are claiming that their BlackBerry products are compatible with Mac. They do not tell you that it is limited compatibility.
Mike
I spent almost 6 hours on the phone (between verizon and blackberry) yesterday. Two of those hours was with RIM tech support.
First off, I have been a loyal verizon customer for over 10 years, no real reason why, and coverage is good in my area. Yesterday I experienced the worst technical support I have ever received in my 42 years of life. Not just from Verizon but literally from any company I have ever done business. One of the Verizon tech support agents actually stated, “that is a you problem.” (in reference to my 8130 pearl from verizon not syncing with my macbook pro.
My wife and I both have very nice jobs, above average incomes and nice company benefits. Between the two of us we spend almost $400/month with Verizon (all paid for by our companies). She spends even more then I because she is required to have the internet card (not sure of the actual term) so her bill is a bit more then mine.
I have never been the type of person to throw around what I spend or what I do to gain an unacceptable advantage. Yesterday, at about hour 5 of being on phone, that rule was tossed out. I had to threaten taking my business elsewhere along with my wife (as she couldn’t careless)
To make a long story short, I was credited back the amount I paid for the phone and was allowed to keep the 8130 pearl, and additional $100 credit to my account for my trouble, and was allowed out of my two year contract. So I am now back to paying month to month, put still unable to sync my calendar to my macbook pro. What is really sad about the whole situation is I really liked the phone. I was debating between the iPhone (which would require me to switch to AT&T) or the 8130. I explained this to the verizon sales rep and he told me the 8130 worked great on the mac and I should not let that hold me back. However, when I called verizon they kept saying it’s not their fault as they don’t support the software and nobody at verizon would ever recommend a third party software. That is the part that really set me off. One of the many verizon support reps told me since I paid for it the software manufacturer should provide support. I told him I did not pay for it and it is a free download from the Blackberry site as RIM signed an agreement with the makers of pocketmac sync manger to be the software of choice for blackberry/mac users.
He then goes on to call me a liar as it is on the internet the software must be purchased.
I then lead him to this link:http://www.discoverblackberry.com/discover/mac_solutions.jsp
I don’t get irate too often, but yesterday was an exception as I don’t take too kindly to being called a liar, especially when I know what I am saying is true of all people who should know I am not lying was the verizon support person I was speaking with trying to seek help.
Now I am just waiting on the iPhone 2, as I am pretty sure it is coming in the very near future.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for taking time to vent. I know it made me feel better. 🙂 It just kills me that BlackBerry does not fix build a program from the ground up.
I thought about waiting but needed email on my phone. I bought an 8GB iPhone the same day I turned the pearl. So far it works pretty good. the email support on the pearl is better since it allows for filtering what gets pushed to the phone. Another thing on the iPhone, there is not copy/paste. On the pearl you could select text and copy and paste it. Very handy. However the iPhone interface is very slick. The browser is very real so your not seeing a version of a web site. It’s the web site only smaller. The Zoom is very cool too.
I’ve heard rumors that the iPhone v1.0 will get a price drop this month March 2008 so I think v2.0 is a few month out.

Hi,
It real comes down to what you can live with. The breaking point for me was not being able to update the firm and possible loosing data if they did it. Aside from that it’s a great phone works well.
Mike
Pocketmac is not your only choice. Mark/Space makes a missing sync tool for blackberries. This is what I use. I’ve had horrific experiences with AT&T, so no iPhone for me until Apple broadens that horizon.
I’m also very disappointed in what RIM offers a Mac user. I am largely pleased with my 8120, but to not make an admin tool for the other 8% of the computer market suggests that their resources are stretched awfully thin at RIM. Or perhaps they don’t consider Mac users ‘serious’ computer users, worthy of enterprise tools. There’s lot to love about the Blackberries, and a lot of room for improvement. The interface controls could use some rethought, as well. Does RIM take some engineering time to use Google and idea-mine for their product maintenance? One hopes.
One can make backups of any data — you only need to take the time to do it. You cannot be upset with some store drone. So many of them aren’t professionals — and selling or supporting cell phones isn’t a career for them — it’s a way to pay the groceries once they were kicked out of school or the basement bedroom at mom and dads. Cut them some slack and learn this: you are the one who needs to know your equipment. The days of customer ‘support’ knowing their product is over. It’s the Walmartification of the world. Welcome to it.
Hi Paul,
Mostly Pocketmac worked save the one issue. It mostly came down to lack of general support for the phone unless you had a windows computer. That includes the need to perform you own firmware updates since the stores claim they do not flash smart phones.
I guess I should have found a 3rd party consultant to give me some advise on devises. I’m so pinched for time I thought a corporate store would be different.

I am so happy? to have come across this site and the information on it. I have been contemplating an iphone since they came out, but was not going to pay to get out of my contract… That contract is close to up, however, EVERYONE I know is a verizon customer and because of that we have the verizon to verizon talk free thing. Plus I can’t stand ATT&T, and checked their reception areas and would have to p[ay out of service area fees A LOT… I am a MAC user and love ical, and contacts… (even tried the itouch and that was a bust), so I either need a smartphone that can do what you all say it can’t (sync to a MAC) or I need a way to switch over to a different cal? and contacts?? Totally at a loss?? but need to stay with Verizon?? any ideas would be greatly appreciated… Thanks
Hi Gretchen,
In my personal experience, so far so good with att and reception. I do understand about free talk issue. It was a consideration them switching me too. However, I use my phone enough that I’m nearly to a point that I can justify an unlimited minute plan. Currently most carries offer an unlimited minute plan for about $99. Not that you should have to pay for a $99 plan if you don’t need it.
If you feel strongly about staying with verizon then I’d look realy close at the Palm treo 755p. It is very Mac compatible. It comes with Palm desktop. You’d have to switch your contacts and calendar to it. The plam desktop works well. I’ve used for years on my mac with a tungsten-e. I’ve heard rumors that the motorola Q9m has Mac software, this is not confirmed.
Mike
I have been using my Motorola Q for a few months now on my mac and it works very well. I sync it with Mark Space. I use Ical and the mac address book and i haven’t had any problems. I use alltel with shares towers with Verizon.
Hope that may help.
Hi Chris,
Thanks for sharing. I’m glad to hear the the motorola Q9m does have Mac software that will sync with iCal and address Book.
Mike
My husband, our grown children, and myself, as well as family members use Verizon, would like to stay with them, and need a phone compatible with the new Mac book Leopard desktop. My husband wants a phone to use for his private practice and after reading the reviews about the blackberry pearl we definately do not want that phone. I have read the two emails on the Motorola Q and the Palm tree 755p which would be used with tungsten-e with the mac computer. Please help with our questions and what direction to go and not have the above problems.
Becky
Hi Becky,
If switching carriers is not an option than look at the Palm Treo. It is a sold phone. In addition if you are already familiar with the tungsten-e then the learning curve will be very low.
Mike
About two months ago I bought my new pride and joy, a blackberry curve, and I absolutely love it. That was until I bought my new mac book for college. It is so intuitive and considering my blackberry was the same way I figured they would sync and update easily, also because my att sales rep told me they would with pocketmac. However, everything works great except for updating my firmware, which is not available on pocketmac. Does anyone know if att offers support for this or how I go about doing this. And no I dont have a regular piece of crap. Thank you very much for your help.
Hi Levi,
I don’t know about ATT but verizon would not update my blackberry saying they don’t update smart phones. If you want firmware updates and such you may have to find a windows friend. The only issue with using a windows computer that you do not have control over is that your contacts and data stay on the windows machine. I have heard of people using a flash drive to run windows off of and if you just bought your Mac Book look into parallels. It will allow you to run windows OS and it’s apps on your Mac book. I’m still PowerPC so I don’t have this option.

Just serfed in. Great site, guys!
Hi everyone! I am a representative of a Telus dealer so, yes, I sell these wonderfully annoying cell phones and/or smartphones! I am currently on this site because, unlike some rep’s, I do care about the product I sell and if it will be a good thing for my client. I do not want to sell a phone to someone if it will cause them pain and misery! I have a lady who is really interested in the Blackberry Pearl 8130, but she has a MAC computer. Obviously I am aware of the pocketmac for blackberry on the rim website, but I still wanted to know what others have experienced with this as I am fairly unfamiliar with MAC OS. It doesn’t seem to be such a great option for her with regards to firmware updates. Can anyone elaborate on these updates for me? Also, no one is mentioning the media aspect of this phone? What about syncing with her music and pictures, will this be an issue? We do carry the MotoQ9m as well as the Palm Treo 755p so if this BB Pearl idea proves to be an ill one then I may offer her one of these devices in its stead! (The MotoQ9m is a really nice lookin phone, but I hope it doesn’t carry the previous MotoQ issues! What a pain that was!) Please! Any info for me is greatly appreciated!
Hi Tausha,
The firmware updates make corrections to things like bluetooth pairing or other physical aspects of the phone that need updating. Not one should have to up date firmware regularly but you should have the option to maintenance your phone if the carrier store will not. Transferring media is was pretty straight forward when you plug the 8130 into the USB port us have the option to have it mount as removable media, like a flash drive. Then you can drag and drop your music and photos to the phone. You still have to put them in the correct folders but it was not so bad. It does not sync media. You have to manually move media around.
Mike
Hi everyone,
I have been a palm user for years. So I carry my palm AND my cell ph around. I wanted to combine the two and be able to sync my palm calendar to my cell ph. A Verizon customer service rep at the store told me that the LG Dare would be compatible with my Palm and my MacBook. I have never been able to get anyone to help me at all. I’ve spent hours working on it and at this point I’m ready to move onto greener pastures. 🙂 I have to stay with Verizon, so it sounds like I don’t want the BB pearl since I’ll have problems with my Macbook. Are they fazing out the Palm treo’s? Are they still as popular and up to date? Do you still have to use a stylus or are they touch? Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
-Julie
Hi Julie,
I’m not sure if the Palm is being phased out. It does still use a stylus. I think this is the best option for Mac users on verizon. Though there may be more options these days that I am not aware of since moving to ATT and an iPhone.
Mike
Thank you.
I have a Mac computer and I cannot get the software to that syncs the Blackberry with the computer to download. PLEASE help!!
I read what you had written on the internet, but I have to admit that I am somewhat technilogically impaired. Could you give me the idiots’ guide to download the software to a Mac, please?!
Hi Sherry,
Are you using pocket mac? There is not guide for idoits here. We only cater to technically challenged.
Can you be more specific in what happens when you sync?
Mike
Great news. Thanks for sharing.
I am really glad to see that you are putting so much of effort for encouraging the readers with valueable posts like this, I have sent this post to my twitter profile.
Hi Mac Leopard,
